Why Your Titles Flop (Even When the Content Is Good)
You made the video. It's genuinely good. The retention curve for the fraction of humans who actually clicked is high. And still — 240 views. Again.
The problem is almost never the video. It's the sentence people read before deciding whether to click. Here are the four ways good creators quietly sabotage that sentence, and what to write instead.
1. You described the topic. You didn't sell the stakes.
"My thoughts on the new iPhone" is a topic. "The iPhone update that quietly broke my two-year workflow" is a stake. One is a summary. The other is a story that has already started. Every scroll-stopping title is the first sentence of a story the viewer needs the rest of.
2. You hedged.
"Maybe the best AI tool of 2026?" is a coin flip on whether it's worth watching. Delete "maybe", "kind of", "possibly", "I think" — every hedge word is a discount on the promise. Confidence is the algorithm's tax. Pay it.
3. You optimized for accuracy over specificity.
"How to save money on groceries" is technically what the video is about. But "The $47 grocery week that made me cancel Instacart" is what the video actually does. Numbers, dollar signs, named brands, and specific timeframes always beat abstractions because they make the promise measurable.
4. You made yourself the subject.
Nobody clicks "My honest review of Notion." Everyone clicks "I cancelled Notion after 3 years — here's what's actually better." Same video. The second one starts with a decision that has already happened, and viewers stay to learn what they should do next.
The rewrite that fixes all four
When a title feels flat, run it through this four-part spine before publishing:
- Stakes — what's at risk or what changed?
- Specificity — is there a number, name, or timeframe?
- Confidence — did you delete every hedge?
- Verb of decision — killed, quit, replaced, cancelled, rebuilt, quietly shipped.
If any one is missing, the title leaks CTR. Fix the leaks and the same video pulls 5–10x the impressions it did before — without changing a single frame.
